Why Digital Retinal Imaging Beats Dilation at Your Next Winter Garden Eye Exam

Why Digital Retinal Imaging Beats Dilation at Your Next Winter Garden Eye Exam

A comprehensive eye exam does more than determine whether your glasses prescription has changed. Examining the retina can reveal important information about your eye health, including changes that may develop before you notice symptoms.

At T. N. Eye Care, digital retinal imaging gives us a detailed view of the back of the eye while offering patients a fast and convenient screening experience. Although dilation remains important in certain situations, advanced retinal imaging can provide valuable information without the temporary effects of dilating drops for many patients.

What Is Digital Retinal Imaging?

Digital retinal imaging uses specialized technology to photograph the retina, optic nerve, blood vessels, and other structures at the back of the eye. Our Optos technology uses ultra-widefield imaging to capture a broad view of the retina in a single image.

These images can be reviewed during your Winter Garden eye exam and saved for comparison at future visits. This makes it easier for us to monitor subtle changes in your eye health over time.

Why Patients May Prefer Retinal Imaging

Traditional dilation uses eye drops to enlarge the pupils so the doctor can examine the inside of the eye. While dilation is an important diagnostic tool, it can temporarily cause light sensitivity and blurred near vision.

Digital retinal imaging provides several benefits:

•          Captures a wide view of the retina quickly

•          Usually does not require dilating drops

•          Creates detailed images that can be stored for future comparison

•          Helps us identify and monitor changes in the retina and optic nerve

•          Allows patients to see images of their own eyes during the exam

For busy Winter Garden patients, avoiding dilation when appropriate can also make it easier to return to work, errands, or other daily activities after an appointment.

Retinal Imaging Can Help Detect Eye Disease Early

Many eye diseases can begin without obvious symptoms. Retinal imaging can help us look for changes associated with conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears, and other retinal abnormalities.

Having a digital baseline is especially valuable because we can compare images from one eye exam to the next. Small changes may be easier to recognize when we have previous images available for reference.

When Retinal Imaging and Dilation Are Both Needed

Digital retinal imaging does not completely replace dilation. Depending on your symptoms, medical history, retinal findings, or risk factors, we may recommend a dilated eye exam even
when retinal imaging has already been performed.

The two methods provide different types of information. Optos imaging gives us a detailed, documented view of the retina, while dilation allows the doctor to examine the inside of the eye directly. In some cases, using both gives us the most complete picture of your eye health.

Make Advanced Imaging Part of Your Next Eye Exam

At T. N. Eye Care, we combine comprehensive eye exams with advanced diagnostic technology to evaluate more than how clearly you can see. Digital retinal imaging helps us monitor your eye health efficiently while determining when additional testing or dilation may be appropriate.
